Top 3 Drills to Improve Hockey Stick Handling

Explosive Side to Side Handling

Equipment needed: hockey ball or puck, hockey stick

This drill is for an intermediate stick handler, you should be comfortable in moving the hockey ball back and forth in front of you.

In this drill you will learn the skills necessary to move the puck laterally and in control.

hockey stick handling

In an athletic stance (knees bent, legs shoulder width apart), with the hockey ball to your left and start to stick handle the ball in quadrant 1, while stick handling the ball slowly move it into quadrant 2, then starting with the ball on the heel of your stick move it into quadrant 4, gain control and start comfortably stick handling again and slowly move it into quadrant 5. Then do the reverse.

This drill is very important, not only does it give you a chance to become more comfortable stick handling off to the side of your body, it will also give you confidence to quickly move the puck away from a defender to reposition the puck on a breakaway for a better angle.

Hockey Stick Figure Eights

Equipment needed: hockey ball or puck, hockey stick, 4 pucks

This drill is for intermediate + advanced stick handlers, although beginners can complete the drill chances are they will become frustrated and compromise form for function.

To set up this drill stack 2 pucks on both of the piding lines of quadrant 2&3 and 3&4 (they should be about 1.5 to 2 ft apart and parallel to one another).

After you have the pucks setup this exercise is very straight forward: simply stick handle in a figure eight around the two stacks of pucks.

This drill will help give you more confidence with the puck in front of you, which is very important as the more comfortable you are in this position the easier it will be for you to deke around defenders and quickly move the puck into a shooting position.

Improve Your Hockey Kwik Hands Elite Weighted System

Equipment needed: Kwik Hands elite system, hockey stick
Sets: 2 system reps per day

This is the only stick handling system that we sell as it is the only system that provides multiple benefits at a cost of less than half of a composite hockey stick.

The key to the weighted system is that because you are moving weights you are forced to utilize proper stick handling techniques - or you won't be able to comfortably use the system.

It reinforces proper wrist-roll movements and at the same time strengthens your wrists, forearms, shoulder and eventually works your core muscles as well. As it is a tiered weighted system you will quickly commit the movements to muscle-memory - which means that when you are on the ice you hands will seem like they are moving themselves without any conscious thought.

The biggest thing to remember when using the system is to go as slowly as possible. Once you become more proficient you will want to move the lower weights much faster than normal and will run the risk of compromising technique for speed, so remember while you are still committing the motions to muscle-memory you want to go slow and do high reps.

One of your goals with this system is to complete a system rep with your head up looking around. This will reinforce your peripheral vision and increase your heads-up play when on the ice.

This system will improve your stick handling, your shot power, shot accuracy and open the door to trick shots and advanced stick handling techniques in a fraction of the time.
